Schwerin is surrounded by a beautiful countryside consisting mainly of lakes and rivers. Beside the impressive scenery it also offers a special landmark: the Schwerin Castle. It was built on an island and is connected to the city by the castle bridge. The cityscape is mostly characterized by numerous monuments and fountains but it is also famous for the half-timbered houses. Culturally, the city offers many annual highlights like performances of the Mecklenburg State Theatre Schwerin or the movie art festival Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Sports enthusiasts may participate in the “Five Lakes run” or the “Pink Paddle”, one of the largest paddle events at the Lake Schwerin. The availability of lakes enable inland waterway connections to larger rivers that can be used by ships. Economically resident companies are mainly from the manufacturing sector and the service sector.
