Castle Schwerin

The Palace of Schwerin (Schweriner Schloss) is on a little island, surrounded by the scenic landscape of the lake and park, in the center of Schwerin. It counts as one of the most significant constructions of romantic history in Europe. At the site of an old Slavic fortress the present Schwerin Palace rose as a contemporary construction from 1845-57 by order of Friedrich Franz II. It was for a residence of the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In style of neo-renaissance he combined local examples, with hints of French Loire-palaces such as Chambord. The design was provided by master builder Georg Adolph Demmler of Schwerin and the top-ranking architect at this age Hermann Willebrand. Many other top-ranking people were involved in the design, including: Academican professor of Dresden Gottfried Semper, the Royal-Prussian goverment building officer Friedrich August Stüler and the master builder of the cathedral in Cologne (Köln) Ernst Friedrich Zwirner. Since 1990 the parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is located in a separated part of the Palace.
